How to Navigate Differences in Relationships? S2E39
Have you ever struggled to control your tongue? In a recent episode of Church Unscripted our pastors discuss practical wisdom for taming our speech and using our words to honor Jesus.
One key insight is avoiding the "try harder" mentality when it comes to honoring God. Pastor Eric explains, "We don't work to get to spiritual maturity - that's what the Holy Spirit does in us. But we put ourselves under the streams of where his blessing already is." Spiritual disciplines like Bible study reveal our love for God, not earn it.
We also tackle how to reconcile with others, even when they don't accept your apology. While we should do all we can to live at peace, we can't force someone else's response. Rebuilding broken trust takes time and intentionality beyond saying "sorry."
In our polarized culture, Pastor David encourages us to see past political and cultural differences, treating others as Jesus would. "Instead of avoiding our neighbors to say, 'I'm not talking to them, they vote differently than me,' be intentional. Show love."
This applies even with contentious moral issues, though we may need to lovingly speak up at times. Pastor John advises focusing on the issue rather than attacking individuals. With humility and grace, we can share Jesus' heart.
Ultimately, taming our tongue means using discernment in each situation to honor God and love others well. Pastor David sums it up: "After somebody listens to this podcast, they're going to go have dinner with a friend who disagrees with them on something… Going into the conversation with the filter of the great commandment is going to help them temper the words and the way they speak."
By relying on the Holy Spirit and seeking to love one another, we can glorify Jesus with every word. Let's use our tongues as an ally for building God's Kingdom!
