How Do I Know when To Stay Silent?

How Do I Know when To Stay Silent?

Ever wished you had the perfect words for a difficult situation? Jesus' example teaches us that sometimes, wisdom speaks loudest in silence.

We often confuse wisdom with knowledge, but they're not the same. Knowledge is about facts and information. Wisdom is about applying that knowledge effectively in real-life situations. Jesus exemplified this difference throughout His life and ministry.

What is Wisdom?

Wisdom goes beyond knowing facts. It's the ability to use knowledge skillfully. As Dallas Willard puts it, "Wisdom is the settled disposition of the soul to act in accordance with knowledge."

Luke's Gospel gives us a glimpse into Jesus' childhood. It tells us that "Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man" (Luke 2:52). This wasn't just about accumulating knowledge. Jesus demonstrated profound wisdom even at a young age. At 12, we find Jesus in the temple, amazing teachers with His understanding. This wasn't just a display of knowledge, but of wisdom beyond His years.

Proverbs is full of insights about wise speech. It tells us that "the tongue of the wise adorns knowledge" (Proverbs 15:2). Jesus perfectly embodied this principle.

In John 8, we see Jesus confronted by religious leaders trying to trap Him. They bring a woman caught in adultery, attempting to force Jesus into a no win situation. His response? Silence and a simple action – writing on the ground.

This moment teaches us that wisdom isn't always about having the perfect words. Sometimes, it's about knowing when not to speak.

When Jesus does speak, His words are measured and profound: "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her" (John 8:7). With this, He turns the accusers' trap back on them, revealing their hypocrisy without directly confronting them.

How can we cultivate this kind of wisdom in our own lives?

  1. Seek wisdom from God: James 1:5 reminds us, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."
  2. Learn to pause: Before reacting, take a moment to consider your response. Pray for guidance, even if it's just a quick "breath prayer."
  3. Surround yourself with wise people: Proverbs 13:20 says, "Walk with the wise and become wise." Find mentors and friends who demonstrate godly wisdom.
  4. Study God's Word: Jesus' wisdom came from His deep connection with the Father and knowledge of Scripture. Regular Bible study helps us develop this foundation.
  5. Practice discernment: Not every question needs an answer, and not every accusation needs a defense. Learn to discern when to speak and when to remain silent.

Jesus shows us that true wisdom isn't about always having the right words. It's about having the right heart, aligned with God's will. As we grow in our relationship with Jesus, we grow in wisdom, learning to navigate life's challenges with grace and insight.
